The National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine shared some excellent news for the Odessa region: grape varieties bred by the V.Ye. Tairov Institute of Viticulture and Winemaking received a protected designation of geographical origin.
Red wine of the Odessa black variety and white wine of the Sukholimansky white variety selected by the V.Ye. Tairov Institute of Viticulture and Winemaking from the harvest grown in the Bolgrad district received the Yalpug (Yalpuh) georeference.
The most unique combination of the Bessarabian steppe, the bright southern sun and the proximity of Yalpug Lake, which has a significant impact on the microclimate of the area where the grapes ripen, made it possible to obtain exclusive local Ukrainian wines from the "Odessa Black" and "Sukholimansky White" varieties.
It should be noted that "Sukholimansky white" and "Odessa black" are unique autochthonous grape varieties, so wines from them are a real find among lovers of local wines and not only.
For wines with the name of the place of origin "Yalpug", 100% of the grapes must come exclusively from the places specified in the specification - the Bolgradsky district of the Odessa region.
As previously reported, in 2019 a number of Bessarabia winemakers united in the Danube Bessarabia Association of Winegrowers and Winemakers to achieve georeferencing. Without it, access to European markets was closed for them.
