The breach of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Dam has caused a catastrophic situation with freshwater in many regions of Ukraine. Specifically, in the Chornobaivka territorial community in Kherson region, the local Vervechyna River, which was the main source of freshwater, has dried up. The remaining artesian wells cannot provide drinking water for the residents. Currently, the issue is being addressed by transporting bottled water from Kherson and Mykolaiv. However, this temporary measure does not solve the problem globally. Moreover, the road to Chornobaivka is dangerous due to constant shelling from the left bank of the Dnipro River.

"The Coca-Cola Foundation, together with the Ukrainian Red Cross, is helping to resolve this humanitarian crisis and has funded the construction of a new artesian well in Chornobaivka village. Access to clean drinking water is vital for the health and well-being of the population. We support the efforts of the Ukrainian Red Cross to improve access to drinking water for affected communities facing shortages. Ensuring sustainable access to drinking water remains a key focus of our work, " stated Carlos Pagoaga, President, Coca-Cola Foundation

As part of the project, a series of other measures will also be implemented to restore and enhance equipment for water supply in other regions of Ukraine.

"The Ukrainian Red Cross is currently working closely with the state sector, including local authorities in the regions, thus understanding the needs firsthand. Moreover, we continuously respond to requests from territorial communities across the country. Since June of last year, the water deficit issue has been particularly acute in regions dependent on the Kakhovka reservoir. Unfortunately, many settlements in Dnipropetrovsk, Kherson, and Mykolaiv regions still face water shortages. It is important for us to support people and provide them with access to drinking water. Therefore, the implementation of this project is a priority in our activities," said Maxim Dotzenko, General Director, Ukrainian Red Cross

The Coca-Cola Foundation has allocated $300,000 USD for the implementation of the programme. Since February 24, 2022, the Coca-Cola System of Companies, together with the Coca-Cola Foundation, has pledged to provide charitable assistance to Ukrainians totaling over $35 million USD.
