The European Union will allocate 20 million euros to the Republic of Moldova for modernizing its air defense systems.

The European Council approved this decision on April 24. This is the seventh assistance package under the European Peace Facility (EPF) for the country.

The funds will be used to finance launchers and short-range air defense missiles.

This year, the EU plans to allocate a total of 60 million euros to Moldova under the European Peace Facility.

The previous assistance package, worth 40 million euros, was allocated on April 7 to enhance infantry mobility and improve the management of short-range air defense systems.

"This measure is intended to finance light tactical mobility vehicles as well as command and control equipment for the tactical and operational integration of short-range air defence systems," the European Council's website states.

The specific air defense systems in question have not been disclosed. Digi24 reported that the funding would be directed towards "eight short-range air defense systems, each equipped with launchers and 24 missiles."

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, emphasized that the EU is Moldova's primary security partner.

"The equipment we are delivering - such as vehicles, protective gear and mobile ambulances - are an investment in peace and to protect people. They aim at modernising Moldova’s army and enhance its defence capabilities, in full respect with Moldova’s neutrality. And more is coming," she said.

Since 2021, the European Union has strengthened Moldova's armed forces with nearly 200 million euros under the European Peace Facility programme.

The European Council emphasized that they aim to provide all necessary support to Moldova in overcoming the challenges it faces due to Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine. They also seek to enhance the country's resilience, security, and stability in the face of "destabilizing activities by Russia."
