The newly elected head of the International Criminal Court, Tomoko Akane, is convinced that Russian President Vladimir Putin will be held accountable for war crimes against Ukraine.

She made this statement in an interview with Kyodo News.

Akane quoted a Chinese proverb:

"Heaven's vengeance is slow but sure," implying that Putin will eventually get what he deserves.

The ICC chief acknowledged that "there have been no cases leading to arrests of individuals against whom arrest warrants were issued" over the past two years.

However, she added: "As long as there is evidence and a need, we must issue arrest warrants regardless of circumstances or political background."

It was reported last week that judges of the International Criminal Court elected Judge Tomoko Akane as the court's president.
