The IT army of Ukraine has reported a successful cyber attack on the Russian state enterprise "Space Communication" and "Gazprom Space Systems", whose satellites are used, among other things, by the Russian Federation's military. As a result of the attack, the largest Russian satellite communication operators are not operational.
Ukrainian hackers stated in their Telegram channel:
"This affects not only the communication of Gazprom itself and state services dependent on their services, but also satellite communication for the military. Military communication at a strategic level."
"Space Communication" is a Russian state-owned company and the national operator of satellite communication, whose satellites, among other things, broadcast Russian propaganda.
"Gazprom Space Systems" is the second-largest player in the Russian satellite communication market after "Space Communication" and the first non-state owner and operator of communication satellites in Russia.
On February 23, 2024, the second anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the company was included in the US sanctions list because "Gazprom Space Systems' satellites are used by the GRU of the Russian Federation, as well as by Russian military and militarized units." Earlier, on December 23, 2023, the operator was included in the sanctions list of Ukraine.
