Counterintelligence of the Security Service of Ukraine has foiled the aggressor's plans to obtain current information about the Ukrainian Defense Forces in the Black Sea waters.
As a result of a special operation in Zaporizhzhia, a military intelligence agent of the Russian Federation has been detained. He was surveilling the locations and movements of Ukrainian combat ships.
Of particular interest to him were the bases and routes of exit into the open sea of armored artillery boats of the Ukrainian Navy.
To gather intelligence, the individual operated under the guise of a long-haul truck driver engaged in interregional cargo transportation. While behind the wheel of a truck, he would enter port areas to pick up commercial cargoes but simultaneously attempted to covertly record the geolocations of Ukrainian ships.
According to available information, the Russian forces hoped to obtain reconnaissance data for planning combat operations in the maritime territory of Ukraine. To prevent this, the Security Service timely exposed the Russian agent and systematically documented his criminal activities. This enabled the timely implementation of comprehensive measures to ensure the security of Ukrainian military vessels.
The perpetrator was apprehended "in the act" while monitoring Ukrainian Navy ships near the port of Odessa and attempting to report to the aggressor.
Additionally, during the investigation, it was revealed that the Russian agent had an additional task: to spy on Ukrainian ground units along the coast of the Black Sea.
At present, the investigators of the Security Service have notified him of suspicion under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (state treason committed during wartime).
The perpetrator is in custody and faces life imprisonment.
