The United States directly accused China during a UN Security Council meeting of supporting Russia’s military efforts as it continues its aggressive war against Ukraine and occupies part of its territory.
This statement was made on Thursday by John Kelly, Acting Deputy Permanent Representative of the United States to the UN.
“China, as its representatives have stated, does not supply weapons to Russia directly. Nevertheless, the PRC has become a decisive factor supporting Russia’s military efforts as the most important supplier of military-industrial equipment to Russia,” the U.S. representative said.
Specifically, he noted that China has provided Russia with a significant number of manufacturing machines, microelectronics, optics, technologies for drones and cruise missiles, as well as nitrocellulose, which Russia uses to produce missile fuel.
“If China were serious about ending the war, it would stop supplying these critically important components to Russia,” Kelly emphasized.
The U.S. representative also recalled the roles of North Korea and Iran in aiding the aggressor. He noted that North Korea has supplied Russia with ammunition, missiles, military equipment, and sent about 12,000 troops to participate in combat operations. Iran has supplied Russia with ballistic missiles, drones, and other technologies.
This, the American representative stressed, violates numerous UN Security Council resolutions and threatens peace and security in Europe and other regions.
Kelly further emphasized that defensive support for Ukraine aimed at protecting it from aggression is fundamentally different from supplying weapons and materials to Russia, which continues its full-scale invasion, and the two should not be equated.
“Last week, we called on all UN member states to help end the war by stopping any support for Russia’s military efforts. We repeat this today,” the U.S. representative concluded.
