An employee of the Foreign Ministry leaked classified information to Russian intelligence.
The Information and Security Service of the Czech Republic revealed that the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service has a "mole" in the country's Foreign Ministry.
This is reported by the Czech edition DenÃk N.
As Prime Minister Petr Fiala, Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský and the Information and Security Service confirmed to the publication, the Czech Foreign Ministry official worked with Russian intelligence and passed secret information to it.
The head of the Foreign Ministry said that the employee was fired, but he did not provide other details.
A few years ago, counterintelligence officers learned that the Russians had a source of confidential information in the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Then counterintelligence managed to establish who leaked information, including secrets.
The counterintelligence service secretly followed this employee for years. In the first half of this year, it was reported to the country's leadership.
As one of the sources said, the Russian special services, recruiting the official, "used his passion for women and money."
According to DenÃk N's sources, the employee had access to top secret documents.
He worked in the ministry for more than 20 years: both in the central office and abroad.
It is currently unclear whether he can be held criminally liable since, under Czech law, if surveillance is carried out only by special services without the participation of the police, the collected evidence cannot be used in court.
