In the first five months of the 2024/25 marketing year (September 2024 – January 2025), Ukraine exported over 352,000 tons of sugar, which is 17% more than in the same period of the previous marketing year. This was reported by the National Association of Sugar Producers of Ukraine Ukrsugar.
The entire exported volume was directed to the global market, while in September 2023 – January 2024, only 9.5% of the export went to the global market.
"The significant increase in the share of the global market in sugar exports is the result of successful efforts by Ukrainian sugar producers to find alternative markets due to restrictions imposed by the EU," noted Ukrsugar.
The main export destinations for Ukrainian sugar in the first five months of the 2024/25 marketing year were:
- Turkey (19% of total exports)
- Libya
- Somalia
- Sri Lanka
- North Macedonia.
Since January 1, 2025, the possibility of exporting sugar from Ukraine to EU countries has resumed. In the first five months of 2025, Ukraine will be able to export 107,300 tons to the EU.
Due to exceeding quotas, the European Union reinstated tariffs on eggs and sugar from Ukraine starting July 2, 2024. After this, sugar exports from Ukraine dropped to critical levels.
In the 2023-2024 marketing season, which ended on August 31, Ukraine exported almost 692,000 tons of sugar, about 60% more than the previous year when a temporary export ban was in place. 77% of Ukrainian sugar exports went to EU countries. On January 31, the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food allocated the sugar quota for the European Union for 2025.
