Ukraine may introduce sanctions against Syria, one of the reasons being the transportation of stolen Ukrainian grain by Syrian ships. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine.

"Participation of Syrian vessels in the illegal export of grain from the occupied territory of Ukraine, "recognition" of the so-called "DPR" and "LPR", the supply of weapons to Russia, which is used in the aggression against Ukraine, comprehensive support of the leadership of Syria for Putin's regime. The list of unfriendly steps of the Syrian Arab Republic toward Ukraine can be continued. And our state, without a doubt, reacts to them," said Yuliya Svyridenko, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy of Ukraine.

She noted that sanctions against Bashar Assad and other leaders of Syria have already been introduced. Ukraine broke off diplomatic relations with the Syrian Arab Republic, and suspends and cancels interstate agreements concluded in previous years. Sanctions against Syria are planned to be imposed for fifty years. Thus, the issue of economic relations with Syria will be closed for a long time.

Among other things, Ukraine plans to:

  • limit trade operations in terms of banning export-import operations with residents of Syria,
  • prohibit the entry of non-military vessels and warships under the flag of Syria into the territorial sea of Ukraine, its internal waters, and ports.

Last year, Syria sharply increased wheat import from the temporarily occupied Crimea, which is a sign of strengthening economic cooperation between the two countries.
