The situation in the Russian labor market is deteriorating due to stricter migration policies and the accelerated recruitment of contract soldiers for participation in the Russian-Ukrainian war.

As of the third quarter of 2024, there were five job vacancies for every officially unemployed person. The labor shortage stands at between 2 and 5 million workers.
The reasons for this include the worsening labor market situation in Russia, the strengthening of migration policies, and the involvement of migrants who have obtained Russian citizenship in the Russian-Ukrainian war. Industrial and construction enterprises require the most migrant workers as unskilled labor. At the same time, there is an increasing demand in Russia for skilled foreign workers.
The labor market is also being severely affected by the speeding up of contract recruitment for the Russian-Ukrainian war. The average one-time regional payment for signing a contract increased from $1,579 at the end of 2023 to $8,433 by the end of 2024.
This situation is severely worsening the economic situation in Russia. However, it does not change the Kremlin's intentions to continue the Russian-Ukrainian war.
