The Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal met in Kyiv with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, High Representative of the European Union Josep Borrel during which the he thanked the EU countries for their leadership in supporting Ukraine and imposing sanctions on russia.
"We are grateful to European politicians for adopting the 5th package of sanctions. russia's ability to finance this war is significantly reduced, but without the oil embargo, the aggressor will have enough resources to drop bombs on peaceful Ukrainian cities for a long time. That is why we call on the EU countries to consider this issue as soon as possible," Denys Shmyhal stressed.
In particular, the Prime Minister of Ukraine thanked the European Union for providing financial assistance to support Ukrainian citizens and the Armed Forces of Ukraine. In particular, for the decision announced today to allocate an additional EUR 500 million for the Ukrainian army.
"We also received the first tranche of macro-financial assistance in the amount of EUR 600 million. Today, the Government has already received a grant from the EU in the amount of EUR 120 million. Ukraine is grateful to you for your support. We also expect the second tranche of EUR 600 million be paid in the near future and a new macro financial program be launched," said Denys Shmyhal.
The Head of Government also thanked the EU leadership for supporting the StandUpForUkraine campaign to raise funds for the needs of internally displaced persons in Ukraine and within the EU, which will take place on April 8-9.
Within the course of the meeting the sides also discussed issues of food security, cooperation in the energy sector, trade liberalization and joint assistance programs for displaced Ukrainians.
