The Government of Japan will provide about USD 170 million (JPY 22.44 billion) for emergency recovery projects, including the rebuilding of critical infrastructure needed to bring Ukrainians home and develop the economy.

The relevant Grant Agreement was signed by Oleksandr Kubrakov, Deputy Prime Minister for Restoration of Ukraine and Minister for Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Development, and Junichi Yamada, Executive Senior Vice President of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), which coordinates the Government of Japan’s official assistance to other countries.

“Another nighttime russian missile attack on peaceful cities clearly shows the world the cunning nature of the enemy. However, we feel the support of our partner countries and have the opportunity to recover quickly. I am grateful to the Government of Japan for its assistance in implementing urgent humanitarian projects. This will help meet the basic needs of Ukrainians to return home and support the economy,” commented Oleksandr Kubrakov.

The Agreement stipulates that the funds will be used for immediate improvements:

  • equipment for humanitarian demining;
  • transport services;
  • power equipment and demolition waste management;
  • water supply and sanitation;
  • medical and educational equipment;
  • support for the agricultural sector.

The Agreement also provides for tools to monitor the transparency and efficiency of the use of funds.

In early January, the Government of Japan pledged USD 95 million for Ukraine’s recovery. These funds will be allocated to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) under a partnership agreement.
