Luxembourg plans to join NATO’s PURL initiative to purchase weapons from the United States for subsequent transfer to Ukraine.
This was announced by Luxembourg’s Prime Minister, Luc Frieden, during a joint press conference with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
“We will finance a package of already available weapons, mostly of U.S. production, for transfer to Ukraine—together with other countries that we still need to identify,” said the Prime Minister, adding that these countries will be determined in the coming weeks.
According to Frieden, each PURL package traditionally costs $500 million, so smaller countries need to find partners for joint purchases.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte reminded that in recent weeks NATO countries have already raised $2 billion to purchase “critically important lethal, sometimes more defensive, weaponry” for Ukraine under the PURL initiative. The packages included, among other things, air defense capabilities and ammunition.
