The Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, and the Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz, discussed military and financial support for Ukraine during a phone call ahead of the European Union summit on February 1, according to ANSA.

"The heads of the two governments discussed key international and European issues on the eve of the extraordinary European Council on February 1, focusing, in particular, on military and financial support for Ukraine," said the press service of the Italian government.

It is noted that Meloni also presented to Scholz the priorities of Italy's presidency of the G7 in 2024.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated that Germany planned to double its spending on military aid to Ukraine and expected other EU countries to increase their contributions.

A special EU summit to approve amendments to the multiannual budget for 2024-2027, including the creation of the Ukrainian Fund with 50 billion euros, will take place on February 1.
