Metinvest-SMC is actively involved in a landmark project for the construction of a new main water pipeline, which aims to quickly provide the residents of Mykolaiv with access to quality drinking water. This large-scale infrastructure project is being implemented in collaboration with the company Autostrada, which is the main contractor.
To accelerate the process and achieve the final goal within an exceptionally short period of just five months, over a thousand specialists and hundreds of pieces of modern construction equipment are working around the clock at the construction site. Metinvest-SMC contributes to this important mission by supplying the necessary metal products, which serve as the foundation for creating a reliable and durable water supply system.
"Our participation is a significant contribution to the formation of vital infrastructure," Metinest wrote in press release.
The company supplies rebar in various sizes, with the total supply volume reaching up to 500 tons. The total length of the future water pipeline will be 67.8 kilometers. It will have a capacity of up to 120,000 cubic meters of water per day, intended for the needs of Mykolaiv. Work began in stages in March (the first section, 18.4 km long) and continued in April with the start of construction of the second (22.9 km) and third (26.5 km) sections.
The pipeline route is primarily being laid outside residential areas, minimizing the impact on existing engineering networks and speeding up the work. Despite the challenging landscape of the route, which includes agricultural land, water obstacles, roads, railways, and existing gas pipelines, advanced horizontal directional drilling technology is being used. This allows the pipes to be laid without disturbing the surface layer of soil.
To ensure stable pressure and water supply along the route, the construction of three powerful pumping stations is planned, each with a capacity of 640 to 800 kW. The pipeline network will use pipes with diameters ranging from 800 to 900 millimeters, capable of withstanding pressure up to 16 atmospheres, resistant to significant temperature fluctuations and the effects of chemicals, ensuring their long service life. At the same time, power supply systems are being installed, including both primary and backup lines, transformer substations, and autonomous power sources. To enhance safety, all pumping stations and key electrical network components will be located in reinforced structures.
"Our joint goal with Autostrada is to ensure the supply of quality drinking water to Mykolaiv by August this year," Metinest wrote in press release.
