Mstyslav Chernov has won the Directors Guild of America (DGA) Award for the film "20 Days in Mariupol."
Chernov received the award for "outstanding directorial achievement in documentary filmmaking." The film depicts the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the bombing of a maternity hospital in Mariupol, and the rescue of the filmmaker and his colleagues from the Associated Press from the besieged city.
Alongside Mstyslav Chernov, the film "20 Days in Mariupol" involved photographer Yevhen Maloletka and producer Vasilisa Stepanenko. They were the last journalists to cover the beginning of Mariupol's destruction by Russia, and for this, all three of them received the Pulitzer Prize.
The film "20 Days in Mariupol" has been shortlisted for the Oscars in two categories: Best International Film and Best Documentary. For the first time in Ukraine's history, a film has been nominated for Best Documentary.
The 96th Academy Awards ceremony will take place on March 11th.
