On the night of June 12, 2024, Russian forces attacked Ukraine with missiles and drones. Ukrainian air defense successfully intercepted most of the threats, except for an Iskander-M missile.
According to Commander of the Air Force Mykola Oleschuk, the Russian forces launched a combined missile and aerial strike using various types of missiles and attack UAVs.
In total, Russian forces deployed 30 air attack assets:
- 4 Kh-101/Kh-555 cruise missiles from Tu-95 MS strategic bombers (launched from the Saratov region, Russia);
- 1 Iskander-M ballistic missile (from Crimea);
- 1 Kh-47M2 Kinzhal aero-ballistic missile (from the airspace of the Tambov region, Russia);
- 24 Shahed-131/136 attack UAVs (launched from Yeysk and Primorsko-Akhtarsk, Russia).
The Ukrainian Air Defense Forces, including anti-aircraft missile units, mobile fire groups, and electronic warfare systems, engaged in countering the attack, successfully shooting down 29 of the 30 aerial targets:
- 1 Kh-47M2 Kinzhal aero-ballistic missile;
- 4 Kh-101/Kh-555 cruise missiles;
- 24 Shahed-131/136 attack UAVs.
Air defense operations were conducted in the Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, Poltava, Kharkiv, and Vinnytsia regions.
