Russia spreads disinformation about alleged success in helping Africa fight epidemics while undermining Western aid
Russian propaganda continues to spread statements by Putin about Russia’s alleged successes in assisting African countries in combating epidemics, but this narrative is part of a broader Kremlin strategy aimed at increasing African dependence on Russia, according to the Center for Countering Disinformation under Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council (NSDC).
"Russian propaganda actively promotes Putin's claims of major achievements in helping African nations fight infectious diseases. In reality, such cooperation is just one dimension of the Kremlin’s multifaceted strategy to expand its influence on the continent," the statement reads.
Alongside medical cooperation, Russia has been running disinformation campaigns targeting Western humanitarian missions, falsely accusing them of spreading diseases and exploiting post-colonial traumas. Since 2022, Russia has reportedly sponsored around 80 such campaigns across 22 African countries.
The NSDC warns that these efforts often result in African countries distancing themselves from Western partners, which in turn worsens the local public health situation.
In addition to humanitarian activities, Russia is expanding its cooperation in other sectors and increasing its military presence across the continent — all with the aim of gaining access to natural resources and strengthening its political and military influence in Africa.
