The counterintelligence division of the Security Service of Ukraine thwarted plans by Belarusian special services to obtain intelligence on the defense of Ukraine’s northern border.
As a result of preemptive actions in Volyn, an agent of the Belarusian KGB spying on Ukrainian troops was detained.
The investigation revealed that the suspect is a 24-year-old local unemployed man who sought “easy earnings” through Telegram channels.
Hoping for payments from Belarusian intelligence officers, the agent agreed to carry out their tasks. These included monitoring locations of checkpoints and fortified positions of the Defense Forces along Ukraine’s northern border.
On behalf of the KGB, the agent also tried to identify military convoys moving along local railways or stationed at transit stations of Ukrzaliznytsia (Ukraine’s railway).
To gather intelligence, the agent surveyed areas, recorded Defense Forces fortifications, and marked their geolocations on Google Maps.
SSU officers uncovered the suspect in advance, documented his crimes, and detained him at his residence.
During a search, they seized a phone containing an anonymous chat used for contact with the Belarusian intelligence officer, whose identity has been established by SBU counterintelligence.
The special operation also secured deployment points and logistics routes for Ukrainian defenders.
Based on the collected evidence, SSU investigators charged the agent under Part 2, Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (state treason committed during martial law).
The suspect is in custody and faces life imprisonment with asset confiscation.
