The military counterintelligence of the Security Service has detained another Russian agent in Sumy. He turned out to be a 23-year-old local resident who was coordinating Russian fire in his region.
The investigation established that it was based on this individual’s coordinates that, on October 22 of this year, the Russians attacked Sumy with Shahed-type kamikaze drones. As a result of the strike on residential buildings in the city, three civilians were killed, including a child, a 9th-grade student from a local school.
According to the case materials, in addition to directing Russian drones at civilian infrastructure in the city, the agent was gathering geolocation data on the Defense Forces. To collect intelligence, the traitor drove around the Sumy area and neighboring regions in his car, covertly documenting “necessary” targets.
It has been established that the agent was in direct contact with a staff officer of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the aggressor country (more commonly known as the GRU). For communication, they used an anonymous chat in a messenger, where the traitor sent videos of potential targets along with coordinates and detailed descriptions of the objects.
The military counterintelligence of the SSU caught the offender “red-handed” while he was carrying out an assignment near military facilities. According to the investigation, the Russian GRU remotely recruited the individual in the fall of this year when he was actively posting in Russian Telegram channels, expressing his anticipation for the capture of Sumy region.
During searches, a phone and laptop containing evidence of his communication with the Russian forces were confiscated from the detainee.
The investigators of the Security Service have notified the agent of suspicion under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (high treason committed in a state of war).
The offender is currently in custody and faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
