Defender of Mariupol and photographer Dmytro Kozatsky with the call sign "Orest", who photographed the military at Azovstal, was awarded a special prize of the Polish Grand Prix Photo Press 2022.
"We believe that Dmytro will receive this diploma in person during next year's competition. We will be waiting for him, alive and well," said Veronika Mirovska, head of the Grand Press Foundation, during the awards ceremony.
This year's photo award winner was The Washington Post reporter Wojciech GrzÄdziÅski. His photo shows Ukrainian Iryna Manyukina playing the piano in her own apartment in Bila Tserkva in the Kyiv region, which was destroyed by an air bomb.
Other photojournalists who filmed the war in Ukraine also received awards. Among them are Andrzej Nowicki from Gazeta Wyborcza with a photo of the Lviv railway station on the first day of the war, and Agency photo reporter Marek Berezowski, who showed an offensive by Russian troops on February 24.
