The cattle population in Ukraine has decreased by almost 200,000 over the past year

As of August 1, 2025, Ukraine’s cattle population in household and industrial sectors totals 2,151,500 heads, including 1,140,400 cows.

According to the Milk Producers Association, citing preliminary data from the State Statistics Service, compared to July 1, 2025, the cattle population fell by 18,000 heads (-0.8%), and the number of cows decreased by 5,800 heads (-0.5%). Compared to August 1, 2024, the cattle population declined by 194,000 heads (-8%), including a reduction of 106,000 cows (-9%).

About 43% of the animals are kept in industrial enterprises, and 57% are in household farms.

In the industrial sector, there are 923,500 heads of cattle, up 2,000 (+0.2%) from July 1, 2025. The number of cows is 381,600, down 500 heads (-0.1%) over the last month. Over the past year, the industrial cattle population decreased by 1,700 heads (-0.18%), while the number of cows increased by 1,400 heads (+0.4%).

In the household sector, there are 1,228,000 heads of cattle, down 20,000 (-1.6%) compared to July 1, 2025. The number of cows in household farms was 758,800 on August 1, 2025, down 5,000 (-0.7%) from the previous month. Over the last year, the household cattle population fell by 192,000 heads (-14%), and the number of cows decreased by 108,000 (-12%).

Preliminary data from the State Statistics Service show the largest increases in cow numbers at agricultural enterprises in Mykolaiv (+12%), Khmelnytskyi (+9%), Rivne (+7%), Ivano-Frankivsk (+4%), and Ternopil (+4%) regions compared to August 1 of last year.
