The Odessa Museum of Contemporary Art has opened at a new location. The first exhibition in the updated space is the project "Calypso's Mirage: Captive in the Depths" by Dmitry Dulfan.
The "Calypso's Mirage" exhibition immerses visitors in the inner world of Dmytro Dulfan, an artist who spent his life oscillating between dreams and reality, as described by the museum curator Anna Morokhovska:
"This exhibition is dedicated to the outstanding Odessa artist who, unfortunately, passed away last summer. He was always a friend of our museum, and such bright works are represented in our collection. It was very important for us to create this exhibition and summarize everything he accomplished during his life. The art of Dmitry Dulfan is an immersion into the abyss, a journey with no final port. It is a ritual that does not lead to light but leaves one trapped in darkness, where the world of shadows consumes reality"
The exhibition covers various periods of the artist's career and showcases a variety of his artistic practices—from graphics and painting to light installations, which the artist called "timnilyknyks." Special attention is drawn to his porcelain figures, which were his last project.
"One of the projects he worked on in the last years of his life were these porcelain figures, which you now see before you. They are everyday decorative elements that, after a long time in a space, become a part of it," as stated in the exhibition description.
Olena Pidopryhora, the museum’s communication and community development advisor, emphasized the significance of the museum's new space, especially after continuing its activities during challenging times:
"The Odessa Museum of Contemporary Art has been operating continuously, but at the start of the full-scale invasion, it did not have its own walls, so all exhibitions and displays were held at partner locations. And now, the museum has its own walls, with the address at European Street, 31/33. The museum continues its mission of showcasing contemporary art."
