On February 19, a conversation took place between Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal of Ukraine and newly appointed Prime Minister of Belgium, Bart De Wever.
The two leaders discussed ongoing support for Ukraine and the intensification of sanctions against the Russian Federation.
The Ukrainian Prime Minister briefed his colleague on the current situation in the country and spoke about the continuous Russian terror against peaceful cities, civilian, and energy infrastructure. Denys Shmyhal emphasized the importance of Belgium's support for Ukraine's energy sector.
Both Prime Ministers unanimously stressed the need for European unity to counter the Russian threat.
In this context, the officials discussed the strengthening of sanctions and the details of the new 16th package. Another important topic was the confiscation of frozen Russian assets.
“Ukraine's position remains unchanged — the aggressor must pay, and together with our European partners, we are working on creating the legal mechanisms necessary to achieve this goal,” said Denys Shmyhal.
The head of the Ukrainian government emphasized the importance of continued assistance to Ukraine.
“It is also crucial to ensure uninterrupted deliveries within the framework of the Ukraine Facility initiative,” said Denys Shmyhal, expressing gratitude to Belgium for supporting this mechanism.
For his part, the Prime Minister of Belgium assured that all aid, including within the security agreement and international coalitions, would continue.
