The Verkhovna Rada appointed Denys Shmyhal as First Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Energy of Ukraine. The decision was supported by 248 Members of Parliament.

In his speech, Shmyhal outlined three main priorities in his new role, the first being restoration. This includes restoring power generation, substations, and distribution networks, as well as forming reserves of capacities and equipment.

"It is necessary to create so-called 'energy battalions' in frontline territories, staffed with specialists, equipped with machinery, and provided with reliable protection. Implement bonuses for energy workers and repair crews," he said after his appointment.

Shmyhal also promised to work on strengthening both active and passive protection of energy facilities. Specifically, the new minister plans to focus on expanding projects for installing electronic warfare and air defense systems with the participation of energy enterprises, as well as building protection for energy facilities and developing decentralized generation.

The third priority Shmyhal named is modernization. He explained that it is necessary to complete integration into the European energy system and continue modernizing power lines at the EU border. He also promised to develop new oil and gas fields.

In response to MPs’ questions, Shmyhal noted that he wants to accelerate the completion of nuclear units at the Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant.

"Nuclear energy is the foundation of our energy system… The Khmelnytskyi plant is closest to building new nuclear units, so my position will be to develop this direction and build as quickly as possible," he emphasized.

Additionally, the official stated that he is open to the privatization of PJSC "Centrenergo."
