The Counterintelligence of the Security Service of Ukraine has exposed another participant of the espionage network of the main directorate of the GRU in Dnipro.
After the arrest of his accomplices in January 2023, he went "underground," but recently switched to a backup communication channel with Russian intelligence and continued carrying out hostile tasks. Thus, this is already the eighth agent from the GRU network in Dnipro exposed by the SSU.
To mask his intelligence and subversive activities, he used his status as a co-founder of a local public organization engaged in volunteering. Operating undercover, the Russian agent attempted to identify the locations of the headquarters of Defense Forces stationed in the region. He also provided the aggressor with information about the approximate quantity and types of military equipment being transported by rail to the frontlines.
For reconnaissance purposes, he observed the movement of Ukrainian military convoys from the office of the public organization located near a railway junction. In addition, the suspect covertly used his acquaintances to gather information about Ukrainian defenders under false pretenses. Simultaneously, the Russian agent tracked information about the consequences of enemy air raids in Dnipro and then relayed the locations of the affected objects and the scale of destruction to the aggressor. Occupation authorities used the reconnaissance information to prepare new and adjust repeated air attacks on the regional center.
During searches at the suspect's place of residence, a mobile phone with evidence of his correspondence with a representative of the Russian GRU was found.
Currently, the investigators of the Security Service have informed the detainee about the suspicion under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (state treason committed under conditions of martial law). Upon the request of the SSU, the court ordered pre-trial detention for him. The investigation is ongoing, and the perpetrator faces potential life imprisonment
