In Poland, the implementation of the 'Eastern Shield' project has been announced, which includes a system of fortifications, barriers, forward bases, and logistics hubs along the border with Russia and Belarus. This was stated by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of National Defense Mariusz Błaszczak during a visit to the Ożysz military training ground in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, near the border with Russia.

"The 'Eastern Shield' project is starting," Tusk announced. He added that this is a joint initiative between Poland and the Baltic states.

The Polish Prime Minister expressed satisfaction that the United States, the United Kingdom, and Finland would collaborate with Poland and the Baltic countries on the creation of the 'Eastern Shield.' He emphasized that a significant part of the infrastructure will have a civilian character.

"This will be funded not only with national resources but also with European funds. I will talk about this in Brussels in the coming days and weeks," Tusk informed.

He noted that everything created within this project will aim to deter the adversary to prevent war.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Mariusz Błaszczak mentioned that at least 10 billion zlotys (over $2.5 billion) will be allocated for the creation of defense infrastructure along the border with Russia and Belarus from 2024 to 2028.

"This is much more than the Baltic countries or any other country in our region is investing," he noted.

He emphasized that the purpose of the 'Shield' is to hinder the movement of enemy troops while facilitating the movement of Polish forces.

The Minister reported that the 'Eastern Shield' will include infrastructure, fortifications, drone systems and counter-drone capabilities, and surveillance systems at all levels.

"According to the plan, construction of the fortification elements was set to begin in 2025, but it will be possible to start as early as 2024," Błaszczak said. In the first months, fortifications and weapon storage facilities will be created along designated sections of Poland's eastern border.
