Ukraine is working on developing its own air defense system and a modern missile system as a deterrent against the Russian 'Orleshnik,' according to Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, in an interview during a telethon.

“We actually produced all the control systems for anti-aircraft missile systems back in the Soviet era,” said the commander. He believes that Ukraine has the capacity and resources for this and that work is underway to create a domestic air defense system.

Syrskyi expressed hope that the system's capabilities would be "no worse than Patriot."

The Commander-in-Chief also referred to Russia's experimental 'Orleshnik' missiles as a threat, for which Ukraine currently has no defense.

“Currently, only a few air defense systems can intercept it. Unfortunately, we do not have such systems yet, but we must do everything to make sure they appear,” Syrskyi said.

He noted that the 'Orleshnik' is prompting Ukraine to create its own missile defense system and engage in active negotiations with partners to acquire a suitable system. According to Syrskyi, this also drives the development of a modern missile system that "could act as a deterrent against the use of such weapons by Russia."

At present, Syrskyi stated that “active work is underway” on both missile defense and missile systems.

"I hope that we will achieve the desired result for us in the near future," he concluded.
