The Russian Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology, and Mass Communications (Roskomnadzor) plans to conduct drills on disconnecting the Russian segment from the global Internet network in specific regions of Russia.
The stated goal is to test the readiness of Russia's infrastructure to maintain access to all services in the event of "external influence on information systems."
In reality, the drills for disconnecting from the global Internet primarily signal an increase in the government's control over the Russian online space and preparations for the country to function under conditions of international isolation and sanctions.
Technically, the disconnection from the global network will be implemented by restricting access to international resources, similar to blocking prohibited websites and VPN services in Russia. Routing adjustments will be made to direct internet traffic through internal Russian nodes. As a result, users in Russian regions will only have access to resources hosted on servers within the country.
