Russians are using the Caspian Sea area for strikes from strategic aviation. There are also Kalibr missile carriers there, but they do not launch these missiles from that location.
This was reported by the spokesperson for the Ukrainian Navy, Dmitry Pletenchuk, during a television marathon.
"Yes, there are missile carriers in the Caspian Sea that can launch 'Kalibr' missiles, but the Caspian Sea is more often used by the Russians for airstrikes. They enter this area specifically to use their launch positions for striking Ukraine," he said.
According to him, they likely do this to avoid potential civilian casualties from the accidental descent of old missiles over their own territory.
The spokesperson noted that the Caspian Sea area is one of five locations where the Russian Navy is based. It is generally believed that Russia has four fleets and a flotilla.
"For us, this basin is important because the Azov-Black Sea region is connected to the Caspian Sea via the Volgodonsk Canal. There have been instances when certain units were transferred both ways," Pletenchuk added.
On November 6, drones attacked the Russian city of Kaspiysk in Dagestan. The port, which is considered the main base of the Caspian Flotilla of the Russian Navy, was hit. A fire was recorded at one of the docks, and all ships left the harbor except for one that was damaged.
