During a meeting in Beijing with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized the need for China and Russia to deepen their comprehensive strategic partnership. Xi highlighted the importance of protecting their development and security interests while promoting a fairer international order.
Lavrov visited China to participate in the meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Council of Foreign Ministers, according to the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“China and Russia must continue strengthening their comprehensive strategic partnership, support each other on multilateral platforms, unite Global South countries, and contribute to the establishment of a more just international order,” Xi stated.
The Chinese leader called on the foreign ministries of both countries to implement agreements made between himself and Russian President Vladimir Putin. He also stressed the importance of enhancing mutual support and cooperation within the SCO framework.
Xi noted that the SCO, jointly founded by China and Russia in 2001, has become a significant regional organization playing a key role in maintaining peace, stability, and development across Eurasia.
“Both sides must steer the SCO’s development in the right direction and work to make this strategic platform stronger and more resilient,” Xi added.
The SCO currently includes ten member states, with its headquarters in Beijing. Initially focused on countering terrorism, separatism, and extremism, the organization’s cooperation has since expanded into trade, economics, cultural exchanges, and other areas.
