Despite Kremlin claims, Russian attacks intensify — Zelensky urges global investment in Ukraine’s air defense

Despite repeated statements from the Kremlin and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin about being ready for peace, Russian attacks on Ukraine have only intensified this summer, said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Rome.

Zelensky reminded participants that a year ago, many believed Moscow’s signals about negotiations and a ceasefire. However, he stressed, this was just propaganda meant to shift the blame for the war’s continuation onto Ukraine.

“Back then, we said that pressure must be applied on Russia, because it was not preparing for peace. Now everyone sees that Putin has rejected all peace proposals and is escalating the violence,” Zelensky stated.

He revealed that just last night, two people were killed and 16 wounded in Kyiv due to Russian attacks. A medical laboratory was completely destroyed, and residential buildings, a shopping mall, a veterinary clinic, and vital infrastructure were also damaged.

“And that happened even though many drones and missiles were shot down. Some still got through. This is what we must focus on — we must stop Russian drones and missiles,” he emphasized.

Zelensky called for increased international investment in Ukraine’s air defense, including interceptor drones and missile systems.

“When Russia steps up its attacks, we cannot afford funding shortages for drone production. Today, over 30 countries and hundreds of companies are attending this conference. Our goal should be to ensure that Ukraine’s air defense and drone sector are supported by these countries and businesses — not only from Ukraine, but also from Europe, the U.S., and beyond,” the president concluded.
