On Wednesday, February 26, the Romanian Senate passed a bill regulating the use of national airspace, granting the military authority to shoot down drones that illegally enter the country's airspace.
According to Digi24, the legislation establishes control measures for airspace usage and defines the government bodies responsible for preventing and countering unauthorized flights of both piloted and unmanned aircraft.
Under the law, drones that cross Romania's borders illegally and operate without permission can be destroyed or neutralized if they cannot be brought under control by Romanian or NATO forces.
The bill also enhances cooperation and coordination among national authorities managing and monitoring airspace, reinforcing flight safety regulations.
Notably, as the Romanian Senate holds the final say in such matters, the law does not require approval from the Chamber of Deputies and will be sent to the president for signing. It will formally take effect upon publication.
This decision follows the recent discovery of debris from Russian Geran drones on Romanian territory. These drones were used by Russia in attacks on Ukraine’s port infrastructure in the Odessa region.
