Two F-16 fighter jets of the Romanian Air Force shot down two drones on Saturday after they entered the country's airspace over the Black Sea without authorisation, Romania's Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported.

"Our military is prepared for the growing hybrid threats and will continue to prioritise air defence and maritime security," the ministry said in a statement on X.

According to the military, the first drone entered Romanian airspace at 17:59 and was shot down within two minutes, approximately 25 kilometres southeast of Sulina.

The second drone was intercepted and destroyed at 18:05, four minutes after entering Romanian airspace, approximately 20 kilometres east of Sulina.

At Romania's initiative, a special meeting of the North Atlantic Council will be held on Tuesday to discuss defence and deterrence in the Black Sea region. Bucharest has informed its NATO allies and EU partners about the incidents.

The Foreign Ministry also noted that Romania and Bulgaria are coordinating closely to accelerate the establishment of an EU Maritime Security Centre in the Black Sea.
