According to the Ministry of Energy, on the night of August 6, Russia launched a targeted attack on a gas infrastructure facility — a compressor station of the Ukrainian Gas Transmission System Operator located in the Odessa region near the Romanian border.
This compressor station was part of the route connecting Greek LNG terminals with Ukrainian gas storage facilities via the Trans-Balkan pipeline, which had already been supplying LNG from the USA and test volumes of Azerbaijani gas.
Today, the equipment supporting these supplies was attacked by dozens of strike drones.
“This is a Russian strike purely against civilian infrastructure, deliberately targeting energy and simultaneously striking at relations with Azerbaijan, the USA, and partners in Europe, as well as against the normal life of Ukrainians and all Europeans,” the statement reads.
Energy Minister Svitlana Hrynchuk emphasized that this attack is a warning signal to all of Europe, which plans to completely abandon Russian natural gas by 2027.
“If the Russians are allowed to strike our energy infrastructure and gas routes with impunity, then no infrastructure facility in Europe will be safe. Impunity only expands terror,” the minister stressed.
As reported by Oleh Kiper, head of the Odessa Regional Military Administration, Russian forces struck the gas infrastructure in the Izmail district with drones that night.
It is known that the fire completely destroyed the production equipment. Due to damage to the main gas pipeline, 2,500 consumers have been temporarily disconnected.
The fire at the facility in the Odessa region was noticed even by residents of Romania during the night.
