The Military Counterintelligence of the Security Service of Ukraine, with the support of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the Commander of the Ukrainian Navy, detained another Russian agent who was spying on the Russian forces within the Defense Forces.
According to the case materials, the suspect was preparing an aerial attack by Russian forces on Ukrainian Neptune missile systems, which control the coastal waters of the Black Sea.
The investigation established that the task was carried out by a 33-year-old serviceman who was recruited by the Russian military intelligence (commonly known as the GRU).
On the occupiers’ orders, the “mole” was to provide them with the geolocations of the unit where he serves and which guards the Neptune anti-ship missile systems in southern Ukraine.
If the coordinates were received, the Russian forces planned to launch a combined strike using kamikaze drones and cruise missiles.
Before the attack, the handler was to warn the agent to retreat to a “safe” distance from the strike zone.
The SSU’s military counterintelligence foiled the Russia’s plans by timely exposing the “mole” and documenting his espionage activities.
After securing the Defense Forces’ locations, the Security Service detained the suspect as he was preparing an intelligence report for the occupiers.
Additionally, the investigation revealed that the suspect was also to coordinate Russian shelling of Ukrainian Armed Forces training centers where he had previously undergone military training.
According to the investigation, the mobilized serviceman drew the aggressor’s attention by spreading pro-Russian comments in the Russian Ministry of Defense chatbot groups.
During a search, the suspect’s phone was seized with evidence of his work for the Russian forces.
The SSU investigators charged the agent under Part 2, Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (high treason committed during martial law).
The offender is in custody and faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
