Cyber specialists of the Security Service of Ukraine have detained two more agents of Russian military intelligence (better known as the GRU) in Odesa. The perpetrators operated as a pair and coordinated attacks by the aggressor against the Defense Forces in southern Ukraine.

According to the case materials, intelligence gathering was carried out by a 61-year-old rehabilitation doctor. To provide more information to the Russians, she involved an acquaintance—a 36-year-old former employee of Ukrzaliznytsia (Ukrainian Railways).

The SSU intercepted a phone call in which the man received instructions from his handler—a career officer of the Russian GRU.

During the briefing, the Russian intelligence officer identified priority targets for fire strikes. These included air defense combat positions and reserve command posts of Ukrainian troops protecting Odesa and the Black Sea area.

The Russian forces also tried to target Ukrainian Armed Forces’ freight train echelons. For this, the Russian agents needed to obtain schedules of military trains and geolocations of their stops at transit stations.

Regarding the rehabilitation doctor’s tasks, under the guise of working with military patients, she covertly questioned them about the locations of the Defense Forces.

Following the handler’s instructions, both agents surveyed the city and its outskirts, recording potential targets with their phone cameras.

SSU cyber specialists documented every step of the suspects and detained them at their residences. Simultaneously, the Security Service carried out comprehensive measures to secure the locations of Ukrainian troops.

The perpetrators remain in custody without the right to bail. They face life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
