On May 26th, a drone from the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine struck an Russian over-the-horizon radar station Voronezh-M. The target hit is located in the city of Orenburg region, Russia.

According to a source, the Ukrainian drone covered a distance of over 1800 kilometers to the target, setting a new record for the range of kamikaze drones.

This incident marks the second attack on Russian radar stations within a week. On May 23, reports claimed that two strikes were made on buildings of the 818th Separate Radiotechnical Center.

The Voronezh over-the-horizon radar stations are designed to detect space and aerodynamic objects, including ballistic or cruise missiles. The family of stationary over-the-horizon radar stations includes:

  • Voronezh-M for meter wave range,
  • Voronezh-DM for decimeter range, and
  • Voronezh-CM for centimeter range.

The Voronezh-M, which was struck by the Main Intelligence Directorate drone, is capable of detecting targets at a distance of up to 6000 kilometers.

The previous record was set by the Security Service of Ukraine on May 9th. At that time, an attack was carried out on an oil refinery plant in Bashkiria. Before launching the strike, the drone flew approximately 1,500 kilometers.
