On Monday, September 2, the upper house of the Romanian Parliament (Senate) approved a government bill for the transfer of the Patriot air defense missile system to Ukraine.
According to Digi24, the government bill was passed with 101 votes in favor, 13 against, and two abstentions.
Nicoleta Paulyuk, Chair of the Senate's Defense Committee, expressed hope that the bill would also pass the lower house—the Chamber of Deputies—by the end of this week, as it holds the final say on legislation.
She also noted that transferring the Patriot system to Ukraine "does not mean that Romania will be left unprotected." Bucharest still has seven such systems, two of which are already operational, two are in service, and three more are expected to arrive soon.
It should be recalled that in June 2024, the Romanian government agreed to transfer the Patriot system to Ukraine on the condition that NATO allies replace it with an equivalent system.
On August 30, the Romanian Ministry of Defense submitted the corresponding bill to Parliament regarding the transfer of the Patriot system to Ukraine.
Today, the Romanian coalition government approved the bill allowing the transfer of one of the two active Patriot missile defense systems to Ukraine.
