The Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) detained a Russian intelligence agent who was preparing coordinates for a new series of Russian airstrikes on Odessa. Among the potential targets were backup command posts and administrative buildings of the Defense Forces.
In an attempt to "break through" Ukraine's air defense during the Russian forces' attack, the agent tried to locate and transmit the coordinates of Ukrainian radar stations to the Russians.
Additionally, to gather information on the actual location of Ukrainian defenders at temporary or permanent bases, the suspect set up hidden cameras.
For example, one of these cameras was camouflaged near the main entrance to the SSU administrative building. The agent transferred the footage from the camera to his mobile phone via a USB drive and then sent it to his Russian handler through a messaging app.
SSU counterintelligence uncovered the criminal, documented his actions, and arrested him. Simultaneously, the Security Service carried out comprehensive measures to secure the Defense Forces' locations.
According to the investigation, the Russian agent was a 21-year-old local unemployed individual who sought to "make quick money" through Telegram channels. There, he was recruited by the Russians and given specific tasks.
During searches of the detainee’s property, video cameras with flash drives, a phone, and SIM cards, which he periodically replaced to conceal his communication with the Russians, were seized.
Based on the collected evidence, SSU investigators charged him under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (high treason committed in a state of martial law).
The criminal is in custody and faces life imprisonment with asset confiscation.
