On Tuesday, the United Kingdom announced a new package of sanctions against Russia, targeting its military, energy, and financial sectors. The sanctions include restrictions on 18 vessels from Russia’s shadow fleet, according to a press release published on the UK government’s website.

The new measures impact 100 entities and individuals involved in Russia’s military operations, energy exports, financial networks, and information warfare against Ukraine.

The sanctions apply to organizations supporting Russia's war machine, energy exports, information operations, and financial institutions that help fund the invasion of Ukraine. The UK also targeted supply chains linked to Russian weapon systems, including Iskander missiles.

“These sanctions will save Ukrainian lives and strengthen our collective security by disrupting Russia’s military machine,” the government stated.

Fourteen members of Russia’s “Agency for Social Design,” which conducts Kremlin-funded information campaigns aimed at undermining sovereignty, democracy, and the rule of law in Ukraine and globally, were also sanctioned.

The British government said the measures would undermine Russian dictator Vladimir Putin’s attempts to bypass existing sanctions and block efforts to reconnect with the global economy.

Additionally, 46 financial institutions aiding Russia in evading sanctions were targeted, including the St. Petersburg Exchange and the Russian Deposit Insurance Agency, which insures domestic banks.

“These new sanctions will further isolate Russia’s economy and disrupt its revenue streams,” the UK government emphasized.

The sanctions also target 18 vessels from Russia’s shadow fleet used to transport oil, along with their enablers. Among those sanctioned is British citizen John Michael Ormerod, who was involved in purchasing ships for the shadow fleet, as well as two Russian tanker captains.

The press release also noted that the UK is working with international partners to tighten the price cap on Russian oil.
