The deepening cooperation between Ukraine and Sweden in the nuclear industry will help strengthen the energy security of both countries and the European continent as a whole. This was discussed during a meeting between the Minister of Energy of Ukraine, Herman Halushchenko, and the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Energy, Business, and Industry of Sweden, Ebba Busch, in Kyiv.

"The cooperation in the nuclear industry between our countries is a priority. We have been able to show other countries that the future of the nuclear industry is possible without Russia: Ukrainian specialists from Energoatom worked together with experts from the Westinghouse plant in Sweden to create technology that allowed us to use fuel from Western production in Soviet-designed VVER reactors. Now this fuel is successfully operating at the Rivne Nuclear Power Plant," said the head of the Ministry of Energy.

The parties discussed the prospects for deepening cooperation between Ukraine and Sweden to further push Russia out of the nuclear fuel and atomic technology market in Europe.

They also highlighted the importance of developing nuclear energy in Ukraine to strengthen the resilience of the energy system.

"We remain committed to the goals of the 'green' transition. At the same time, the Ukrainian experience gained during the recent war years proves that for the resilience of the energy system, it is important to have strong base generation. This base generation for Ukraine is nuclear, which has helped us survive the third winter in the conditions of war," noted Herman Halushchenko.

Ebba Busch, in turn, emphasized that in Sweden, renewable energy plays a leading role, which depends on various factors, including weather conditions. However, Ukraine's experience, living in wartime conditions, has demonstrated the importance of stable and reliable generation for energy security.

"You cannot build an energy system only for peaceful times... Therefore, Sweden plans to develop not only renewable energy but also nuclear energy. And we see significant potential in cooperation with Ukraine in this direction," she said.
