In Teofipol, Khmelnytskyi region, the first municipal miscanthus plantation in Ukraine—covering 8 hectares—has been planted with the support of a EUR 50,000 grant from Slovenia, the Khmelnytskyi Regional Development Agency reported.

A plot of polluted, agriculturally unsuitable land near the local wastewater treatment facilities was selected for planting the miscanthus, a plant known for its ability to absorb contaminants. This makes it the first municipal plantation of this crop in Ukraine.

“In the long term, miscanthus will make it possible to transform degraded soils into fertile land in an efficient and cost-effective way. In addition, its biomass will soon be used as a raw material for environmentally friendly fuel,” the agency emphasized.

The project is being implemented with financial assistance from the Embassy of Slovenia in Ukraine, Slovenia Aid & Partnerships, and with support from the Khmelnytskyi Regional Military Administration, the NGO “Khmelnytskyi Energy Cluster,” in partnership with the Regional Development Agency and the Teofipol Settlement Council.

Miscanthus is a perennial grass from the Poaceae family, used both decoratively and as a bioenergy crop. It is typically cultivated for biomass, which can be converted into alternative fuel, making it a promising renewable energy source.
