Ukrainian borscht recognized as a UNESCO cultural heritage site


Ukrainian borscht is now on the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Immediate Protection.

Today, July 1, at the fifth extraordinary meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Protection of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, the element “Culture of cooking Ukrainian borscht” was included in the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Immediate Protection.

This was reported by the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine.

The Committee recognized the universal value of Ukrainian borscht and its significance for world culture. Thus, now the culture of cooking the Ukrainian national dish is under the protection of UNESCO.

Borscht is ours. This decision, taken today at an extraordinary meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Protection of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, recognizes its universal value and significance for world culture. Ukrainian borscht, which is a symbol of life, creativity, strength and sustainability of Ukrainians, is now under the protection of UNESCO

It is noted that the inclusion of the “Culture of cooking Ukrainian borscht” is not only an important step to preserve the identity of our Ukrainian nation, rich in cultural traditions and customs, but also extraordinary support to all Ukrainians who are now defending Ukrainian land from Russian invaders.

Borscht is an element of social integration and cohesion that serves to unite the people of Ukraine, regardless of age, gender or origin. In this sense, the element demonstrates the important role of intangible cultural heritage during armed conflicts and emergencies
