The Institute for Plant Variety Examination of Ukraine has been conducting trials of cotton varieties provided by various companies, including foreign ones, for the second year in a row.
This was reported by the director of the Institute, Serhii Melnyk.
“Last year we tested five varieties: the seeds were provided by companies from Germany, the United States, and Turkey for further trials and possible registration. As a result of the tests, two varieties were already included in the state register,” he said.
Currently, the register also includes two domestic early-maturing varieties developed by the Institute of Climate-Oriented Agriculture of NAAS, now located in Odessa. For cultivation on non-irrigated land, scientists recommend the Podozerskyi 4 variety, and for irrigated land — Dniprovskiy 5.
In addition, the register already contains several foreign varieties. Compared to the Bulgarian early-ripening variety Beli Izvor, the new ones mature 5–10 days earlier. At the same time, the fiber quality fully meets the requirements of the textile industry.
This year, the Institute for Plant Variety Examination is testing six cotton varieties. Due to climate conditions, sowing was somewhat delayed this year.
“The last cotton experiments we harvested were in late October – early November,” Melnyk recalled.
