Trump appears to have scored another own goal
Analysts at Res Futura Data House examined how Polish and American social media users reacted to Washington's latest moves on Ukraine. The findings should raise concerns in the White House.
Poland: "Ukraine has been sold out. We're next."
The most common accusation in Polish online discussions is that Trump has sold Ukraine out to Putin. This view was expressed by 17% of commenters who took a clear position. One in four comments immediately shifted the discussion towards Poland, with that figure rising to 32% under posts about the fuel agreement.
This is the most significant warning sign. Poland is a key US ally on NATO's eastern flank. If the belief takes hold that Washington is abandoning its partners one after another, it could undermine confidence in American security guarantees more effectively than any political statement.
United States: Ukraine becomes a domestic problem for Trump
Trump's demand that Zelensky halt strikes on Russian oil refineries was criticised by 88% of American commenters who expressed a position. Under the post containing that warning, 96% of comments about Trump were negative, while 88% of those about Zelensky were positive. A typical reaction was that Washington should be helping Zelensky rather than Putin.
Notably, these reactions appeared under Fox News posts, on a platform traditionally associated with Republican audiences. There, 80% of commenters expressing a party preference sided with the Democrats. In discussions about Ukraine and Russia, 71% defended Zelensky, while 94% expressed negative views of Moscow.
Among comments referring to the November elections, 31% called for voting Democratic, compared with 20% supporting Republicans. The analysis suggests that the Ukraine issue played a role in shaping these reactions.
An important qualification: this is an analysis of social media comments, not a representative opinion poll. Nevertheless, the findings suggest that attempts to pressure Kyiv into reaching an agreement with Moscow are generating negative reactions towards Trump both in Europe and at home.
In Poland, such pressure risks undermining confidence in the United States. In America, it may strengthen opposition to his party ahead of the elections.
Trump appears to have underestimated the extent to which Ukraine has become a test, in the eyes of Western societies, of whether America keeps its promises.
