Zelensky dismissed the head of the SBU Bakanov

On Sunday, July 17, in the evening, a decree appeared on the president’s website on the removal of the head of the Security Service of Ukraine, Ivan Bakanov.

“In accordance with Article 47 of the Disciplinary Charter of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, approved by the Law of Ukraine dated March 24, 1999 No. 551-XIV, remove Bakanov Ivan Gennadyevich from his duties as head of the Security Service of Ukraine,” the decree signed by President Volodymyr Zelensky says.

Article 47 of the Disciplinary Status of the Armed Forces of Ukraine states: “Failure to perform (improper performance) of official duties that caused loss of life or other grave consequences or created a threat of such consequences is the basis for the removal of such a serviceman from the performance of official duties.” The following is an explanation of the elimination mechanism.

What caused Bakanov’s removal from office is unknown.

Ivan Bakanov came to the post of head of the SBU on August 29, 2019 as a member of Zelensky’s team. Prior to that, for several months, he was the first deputy head of the SBU and acted as head of the law enforcement agency.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky also removed Irina Venediktova from the post of Prosecutor General. The reasons for the dismissal of Venediktova are also not reported.
