The documentary film "20 Days in Mariupol" by Ukrainian director Myroslav Chernov was honored with two more awards at the Grierson: The British Documentary Awards.
The awards are presented by the charitable organization The Grierson Trust, which recognizes "innovative and captivating documentary films" in honor of Scottish documentary filmmaker John Grierson.
"20 Days in Mariupol" won in two categories: Best Current Affairs Documentary and Best Cinema Documentary.
The film "20 Days in Mariupol" tells the story of the first weeks of fighting in Mariupol, Donetsk region, during Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
The film was created by director and photographer Myroslav Chernov, photographer Yevhen Malolietka, and producer and journalist Vasylysa Stepanenko. They became the last journalists to cover the beginning of Russia's destruction of Mariupol — for this, all three received the Pulitzer Prize. They were also awarded the Shevchenko Prize in 2024.
The film became the highest-grossing documentary in Ukraine last year, earning 500,000 hryvnias just during its opening weekend.
The film also won in the "Best Documentary" category at the British BAFTA film awards. Myroslav Chernov received the Directors Guild of America (DGA) Award for "Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentary Filmmaking."
