Latvian President Egils Levits stated that in 2024, the country intends to strengthen its military infrastructure along the borders with Russia and Belarus. This information was reported by Delfi.
One of Levits' priorities is fortifying the eastern border not only with Belarus but also with Russia. According to him, the eastern border needs reinforcement in terms of military infrastructure. The Latvian leader emphasized that a fence alone would not protect against significant military threats.
"The fence is designed to prevent hybrid threats," noted Levits.
He added that this year, efforts are needed to implement a civil defense system, while also highlighting the paramount importance of increasing funding for the internal affairs system.
Discussing plans for the year, the Latvian president acknowledged the possibility of certain legislative initiatives but did not disclose specific details.
"I can only say that I will act within the framework of the three priorities I outlined in my speech in the Saeima on the day of the inauguration when taking office - security, education, and competitiveness," explained Levits.
